Since the expansion of London's ultra low emission zone (Ulez) on August 29 last year, drivers have accrued over £322 million in fines for non-payment of fees, with nearly 1.8 million penalty charge notices (PCNs) issued. The total value of the fines stands at £322.8 million, with each PCN set at £180, reduced to £90 if paid promptly. Transport for London (TfL) has also collected around £176 million from compliant drivers during this period, indicating a substantial influx of funds aimed at improving public transport. Mayor Sadiq Khan expanded the Ulez to cover all boroughs to combat air pollution, a decision he deemed necessary despite its challenges. Vehicles not meeting Ulez standards, generally those registered before 2005 for petrol and those before September 2015 for diesel, incur a daily fee of £12.50 unless exempt. Failure to pay can lead to increased fines and potential recovery actions by TfL.
