Cubs Win Game 1; Brewers Clinch No. 1
The Milwaukee Brewers clinched baseball's best record and the National League No. 1 seed and will open the NLDS at American Family Field. The 2025 MLB playoffs opened Tuesday with wild-card action, including the Boston Red Sox beating the New York Yankees 3-1 after New York's bullpen surrendered a late lead. At Wrigley Field the Chicago Cubs defeated the San Diego Padres 3-1 in Game 1 of the best-of-three NL Wild Card Series, taking a 1-0 edge. Seiya Suzuki and Carson Kelly hit back-to-back solo homers off Nick Pivetta in the fifth, and Chicago relievers Daniel Palencia, Drew Pomeranz, Andrew Kittredge and Brad Keller combined for 4 2/3 no-hit innings to finish the victory. San Diego produced no homers, left multiple runners stranded and — after ranking 18th in runs scored — faces urgency for Game 2, while Chicago (92-70) can advance to the NLDS with a Wednesday win. Elsewhere the Los Angeles Dodgers host the Cincinnati Reds (Blake Snell vs. Hunter Greene), with some coverage briefly shifting to ESPN2 while the Red Sox‑Yankees game finished.
