World Premiere of Kavalier and Clay Opera

The world-premiere opera adaptation of Michael Chabon's Pulitzer Prize-winning novel "The Amazing Adventures of Kavalier & Clay" will debut at Indiana University's Jacobs School of Music on November 15, 2024, before moving to the Metropolitan Opera in September 2025. Composed by Mason Bates and written by librettist Gene Scheer, the opera explores the lives of two Jewish cousins in 1940s New York, tackling themes of identity, escapism, and loss as they create a superhero comic book character to fight the Nazis. Originally intended for the Los Angeles Opera, the production found a new home in Bloomington due to the local school's advanced facilities and resources. The collaboration between Jacobs and the Met marks a significant opportunity for students to engage in a high-profile production, enhancing their educational experience. Leading up to the premiere, various discussions and panels have been held to delve into the opera's themes and the future of opera in educational settings. The opera's intricate staging and elaborate design are expected to showcase the talents of nearly 300 voice students at the IU campus.
