Cobb County Jail Pilots Robot Patrols

The Cobb County Jail in Georgia has introduced three state-of-the-art Sentry Robots developed by DEKA Research and Development Corporation as part of a 90-day pilot program aimed at enhancing security and operational efficiency. Standing nearly six feet tall, these robots are equipped with advanced technology including 360-degree cameras, night vision, and heat detection capabilities, allowing them to assist in perimeter patrols, security rounds, and headcounts within the facility. Sheriff Craig Owens highlighted that this is the first deployment of such technology in a jail setting, emphasizing that the robots will not replace human deputies but will assist them in their duties. The pilot program is being conducted at no cost to taxpayers, and if proven effective, the sheriff's office will consider permanent integration of the robots. The robots are also designed to detect medical emergencies, helping ensure timely assistance for detainees in distress. With the potential for further upgrades, including health-related improvements, the initiative represents a significant step towards modernizing jail operations.
