The West Bengal assembly passed a resolution urging the Union government to review new criminal laws replacing the IPC and CrPC, amid criticism from opposition BJP members who argued it was unnecessary since the laws are already in effect. Law Minister Moloy Ghatak led the Trinamool Congress (TMC) push for the resolution, citing the need for consensus among legal experts and citizens to protect fundamental rights. The new laws, which took effect on July 1, have been characterized by TMC members as draconian, a claim dismissed by BJP leaders. They argued that the laws were passed with due consideration of stakeholders' opinions, including those of Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee. Adhikari, the Leader of Opposition, emphasized that the laws were enacted under constitutional powers, rendering the assembly's discussion a waste of time. The TMC contends that the laws were enacted without proper consultation with the Law Commission or relevant stakeholders.
