Earth is set to have a temporary companion in the form of a mini-moon, an asteroid named 2024 PT5, which will be captured by Earth's gravity from September 29 to November 25, 2024. Discovered by the Asteroid Terrestrial-impact Last Alert System (ATLAS), this 33-foot asteroid will perform a loop around our planet before departing, reaching its closest point at roughly twice the distance to the Moon. While mini-moons are a rare phenomenon, this is not the first occurrence; similar events have been documented in 1991, 2020, and 2022. Despite its intriguing nature, 2024 PT5 will be too dim for most amateur astronomers to observe without specialized equipment. The event offers scientists an opportunity to study the behavior of near-Earth objects and the dynamics of gravitational capture. After its visit, 2024 PT5 will remain in the Earth's vicinity until January 2025, but will not return until 2055.
