Chicago is set to implement significant changes to its migrant shelter system under Mayor Brandon Johnson's new One System Initiative, effective January 1, 2025. This initiative will merge the existing migrant shelters with the city's homelessness services, limiting access for migrants to those who have been in the U.S. for 30 days or less. Consequently, hundreds of migrants currently residing in shelters could face eviction, as existing shelter extensions will no longer be available for those exceeding a 60-day stay, barring special circumstances. The city plans to add 3,800 new beds to accommodate both migrants and long-term homeless individuals, but with nearly 5,000 migrants currently in shelters, there are concerns that many may be left without shelter. The changes come amid a decrease in migrant arrivals to Chicago and a tightening budget for city services. City officials emphasize that the initiative aims to create a more equitable system serving all unhoused residents, regardless of immigration status.
