A tragic incident at the Mollie Kathleen Gold Mine in Cripple Creek, Colorado, resulted in one fatality and left 12 people trapped 1,000 feet underground due to a mechanical issue with the elevator system. While the cause of the malfunction is under investigation, 11 people, including two children with minor injuries, have been rescued. The trapped individuals, who are safe and have essential supplies, include a mine employee with rescue experience. Sheriff Jason Mikesell hopes to safely rescue the remaining individuals by the evening, aided by the Colorado Fire Department and state resources provided by Governor Jared Polis. The mine, a tourist attraction since the 1800s, last experienced a similar incident in 1986. Rescue efforts continue with a focus on restoring the elevator or using ropes if necessary.
