Heat Wave Triggers Thousands Power Outages Staten Island, Queens, Bergen County

A severe heat wave continues to impact the Tri-State area, causing widespread power outages and straining utility infrastructure. In Staten Island, around 150 Con Edison customers are without power in multiple neighborhoods, with the heat expected to peak at 97 degrees. Queens and eastern Brooklyn have also experienced significant outages, with Con Edison reducing voltage by 8% in parts of Brooklyn to prevent further failures, while urging residents to conserve energy, especially limiting air conditioner use. Bergen County, New Jersey, is affected as well, with over 1,300 PSE&G customers losing power and several cooling centers opened to help residents cope with the extreme heat reaching nearly 98 degrees. Utility companies warn that overheating wires and transformers, combined with high demand, are likely to cause more outages in the coming days if the heat persists. Residents and businesses face challenges such as sweltering conditions, inoperable street lights, and disruptions to daily activities due to the ongoing electrical issues amid the record-setting temperatures.
