Labour plans 80% sick pay guarantee for 1.3 million low-paid workers

The UK government has announced a new sick pay guarantee for over 1.3 million low-paid workers, allowing them to receive 80% of their weekly salary from the first day of illness. This change aims to improve living standards and reduce the need for workers to choose between their health and income. Currently, those earning less than £123 per week do not qualify for statutory sick pay, which has been criticized as one of the lowest rates among developed nations. Work and Pensions Secretary Liz Kendall emphasized that this policy will benefit both workers and businesses, although some trade unions argue the replacement rate should be raised to 95%. Business representatives have expressed concerns that immediate access to sick pay may lead to increased absenteeism. The updates are part of a broader Employment Rights Bill intended to enhance workers' rights in the UK.
