Hashem Abedi moved to Belmarsh after guards attacked at HMP Frankland
Hashem Abedi, convicted for his role in the 2017 Manchester Arena bombing, has been transferred from HMP Frankland to the high-security Belmarsh prison after violently attacking three prison officers with hot oil and homemade weapons. The incident left two officers hospitalized with life-threatening injuries and has prompted calls from prison staff and their union for improved protective measures, including stab-proof vests and access to tasers. The Ministry of Justice and the UK government have pledged urgent reviews and investigations into the attack, with the separation unit involved now designated as a crime scene. Survivors of the Manchester bombing and union leaders have described the attack as a catastrophic failure of duty to protect prison staff and the public. There are demands for a full ban on cooking facilities in separation units, which house the UK’s most dangerous offenders, and for a reevaluation of staff safety protocols. Abedi is now held in one of the UK's most secure, highly monitored cells at Belmarsh.
