Eala stuns Keys, makes tennis history at Miami Open
In a remarkable upset at the Miami Open, 19-year-old Alexandra Eala defeated Australian Open champion Madison Keys with a score of 6-4, 6-2, marking her as the first Filipino woman in the Open Era to defeat a top-10 player. Eala celebrated the victory, which followed her earlier win over 2017 French Open champion Jelena Ostapenko, and expressed hopes that her success would elevate Filipino tennis. Keys, who admitted to not being at her best, cited issues with her serve and overall performance. Meanwhile, Iga Swiatek advanced to the round of 16 by defeating Elise Mertens 7-6(2), 6-1, achieving a record 25 consecutive appearances in the last 16 of WTA 1000 events. Swiatek will next face Elina Svitolina, aiming to continue her strong performance. Eala's next challenge is against 10th-seeded Paula Badosa for a spot in the quarterfinals.
