UD Student Killed, Eight Hurt in U-Haul Crash

On April 29, 2025, a University of Delaware student was killed and at least eight people were injured after a stolen or unreturned U-Haul truck fled police and struck multiple pedestrians and vehicles on Main Street in Newark, Delaware. Police had found the unauthorized U-Haul in a parking lot and, as they attempted to arrest its two occupants, the driver fled, hitting a police vehicle and speeding onto Main Street. Officers did not pursue, but the truck hit two pedestrians—killing one student and seriously injuring another—before colliding with several parked cars and coming to a stop. Both suspects were detained, with the driver hospitalized for serious injuries. Three additional people were hospitalized with non-life-threatening injuries, and three more were treated at the scene. The tragedy prompted condolences from university and city officials and renewed calls for pedestrian safety, as mourners left tributes at the crash site.
