Hamburg Hospital Fire: Patient Arrested, 3 Dead
A fire broke out shortly after midnight in the geriatric ward of the Marienkrankenhaus hospital in Hamburg, Germany, killing three elderly patients aged 84 to 87 and injuring over 50 others, several seriously. Roughly 220 emergency personnel responded, evacuating many patients with limited mobility and rescuing individuals trapped by smoke in the four-story building. The blaze, which began on the ground floor, was brought under control within about 20 minutes. Authorities later arrested a 72-year-old patient on suspicion of starting the fire and are investigating potential psychiatric issues. Most injured victims were treated at the hospital or nearby clinics, and police continue to investigate the incident. The Marienkrankenhaus is one of Hamburg’s major hospitals, treating more than 90,000 patients each year.
