Ilya Lichtenstein has been sentenced to five years in prison for his role in the 2016 Bitfinex cryptocurrency heist, where he stole nearly 120,000 bitcoin valued at around $71 million at the time but worth over $4.5 billion by their arrest. He and his wife, Heather Morgan, known as 'Razzlekhan', used sophisticated methods to launder the stolen funds, including fake identities and purchasing NFTs and gold. Lichtenstein expressed remorse for his actions and plans to use his skills against cybercrime after completing his sentence, which includes three years of supervised release. Morgan, who also pleaded guilty, is set to be sentenced on November 18. The case highlights significant challenges in tracking cryptocurrency crimes and the complexities involved in digital asset theft. The seizure of $3.6 billion in assets from the couple marks the largest financial seizure in U.S. Department of Justice history.
