Rare 1975 Roosevelt Dime Sells for $506,250

A rare 1975 Roosevelt dime, missing its distinctive 'S' mint mark and one of only two known examples, sold at an online auction for $506,250. The coin was inherited by three Ohio sisters from their late brother, who had kept it in a bank vault for over 40 years. Originally purchased by their family in 1978 for $18,200, its value has significantly appreciated, equivalent to about $90,000 today. The auction was conducted by GreatCollections, whose president Ian Russell noted the coin's mystery and rarity had intrigued collectors for decades. This 'no S' proof dime was part of a special uncirculated set produced by the San Francisco mint, which included six coins. The sale has sparked interest in the possibility of finding more examples of this error among the proof sets.
