Sony Pictures Plans La Bamba Remake

A remake of the 1987 biopic 'La Bamba,' which chronicles the life of rock pioneer Ritchie Valens, is in development by Mucho Mas Media and Sony Pictures. Luis Valdez, who wrote and directed the original film, will serve as executive producer, while Oscar-nominated writer José Rivera will pen the script. The original film was a significant success, earning a Golden Globe nomination and featuring hit songs like 'La Bamba' and 'Donna,' solidifying Valens' legacy as the first U.S. Latino rock star. Valens tragically died in a plane crash at age 17 in 1959, an event that has been immortalized in music history as 'The Day the Music Died.' Valdez expressed that new biographical details warrant a fresh cinematic look at Valens' impactful yet short life. The original film has since been recognized for its cultural significance by being inducted into the National Film Registry.
