Delhi Begins Cloud‑Seeding Trials Amid Doubts
The BJP-led Delhi government has begun trialling cloud seeding, with test flights and seeding flares already carried out, aiming to induce artificial rain to wash post‑Diwali smog if suitable clouds form — officials say a first attempt could occur on October 29 pending IMD clearance. Chief Minister Rekha Gupta called the experiment a “necessity” and credited Environment Minister Manjinder Singh Sirsa and technical teams, while IIT Kanpur’s Prof. Manindra Agrawal, who is leading the project, said the Burari trial was technically successful and that adequate cloud moisture could sharply cut particulates — possibly lowering Delhi’s AQI below 100. The city sanctioned about ₹3.21 crore to fund multiple trials (reported as five trials) plus additional setup costs, and authorities say pilots, aircraft and equipment are ready. Meteorologists, the IMD and some retired scientists have warned that current dry conditions, low humidity and historically low success rates make an effective outcome uncertain, and two Delhi atmospheric scientists described the plan as a “gimmick.” Seeding will proceed only with favourable meteorological conditions and formal IMD approval, leaving the operation’s success dependent on uncertain weather.
