The inquest into the deaths of three premature babies, including nine-day-old Yousef Al-Kharboush, who died at St Thomas' Hospital in London in 2014 after developing sepsis from contaminated feed, has begun at Southwark Coroner's Court. Ghanda Al-Kharboush, Yousef's mother, described the experience as 'the worst nightmare a parent could have' as she watched her son deteriorate after receiving intravenous feed infected with Bacillus cereus. The inquest aims to examine how these babies died and whether preventive measures can be recommended to avoid future deaths, as stated by Senior Coroner Dr. Julian Morris. Yousef was one of 19 babies affected by this outbreak across nine hospitals, with two other infants, Oscar Barker and Aviva Otte, also succumbing to similar infections. The coroner emphasized that the inquiry's focus is on identifying causes rather than assigning blame. The findings from this inquest could lead to recommendations for improved safety protocols in neonatal care.
