Abdelmadjid Tebboune Re-elected as Algeria's President
Algerian President Abdelmadjid Tebboune has been re-elected with 94% of the vote, as announced by the country's electoral authority. This victory comes amid allegations of electoral irregularities and a low voter turnout of only 48%, with less than six million of the 24 million eligible voters participating. His main challengers, Islamist Abdelali Hassani Cherif and socialist Youcef Aouchiche, received only 3% and 2.1% of the votes, respectively. Critics, including Amnesty International, have condemned the election as a 'rubber stamp exercise' due to a repressive campaign atmosphere that included harassment of opposition figures. Despite the controversies, Tebboune is expected to continue his social spending policies, supported by increased energy revenues, as economic challenges like high inflation and unemployment persist. The election reflects ongoing tensions in Algeria, particularly with the youth demographic struggling with socio-economic issues.
