Nine Amateurs Compete for Silver Medal at 2025 Open Championship in Northern Ireland
The 153rd Open Championship is set to take place at Royal Portrush Golf Club in Northern Ireland from July 17-20, 2025, featuring 157 players from 31 countries, including nine amateurs making their major debuts. The course is one of the longest in Open history, playing 7,381 yards with a par of 71. Notable amateurs include Filip Jakubčík and Richard Teder, who are the first from Czech Republic and Estonia respectively to compete, as well as strong contenders like Connor Graham, a two-time British Amateur champion, and Sebastian Cave from UNC Charlotte. Among the professionals, top players like Rory McIlroy, Scottie Scheffler, and J.J. Spaun are expected to contend, with Scheffler aiming to improve his mixed Open Championship record. Additionally, 19 LIV Golf players will participate, marking the largest LIV contingent in a major since 2023. The leading amateur who completes all 72 holes will earn the prestigious Silver Medal, a tradition dating back to 1949.
