The University Grants Commission (UGC) has granted state university status to Khallikote Unitary University in Odisha, recognizing it under section 2(f) of the UGC Act, 1956. This recognition, termed an 'Independence Day gift', alleviates uncertainty for over 10,000 students following years of administrative confusion regarding the university's status. Established in 1856, Khallikote has undergone various transformations, gaining autonomous status in 1990 and later being declared a unitary university in 2021. Despite these advancements, it initially failed to meet UGC criteria for state university status, causing delays in recognition. The in-charge vice-chancellor, Geetanjali Dash, expressed that this official recognition will enable the university to seek central assistance under the UGC Act. The UGC’s recent decision marks a significant achievement for the institution, fostering hope for its students and alumni.
