Oldham Opens Covid Memorial Garden, Marks Pandemic Anniversary
The Mayor of Oldham, Cllr Dr Zahid Chauhan, officially opened a Covid Memorial Garden in Alexandra Park, coinciding with the national Covid Reflection Day, which honors those lost to the pandemic and recognizes the efforts of frontline workers. The garden features a memorial boulder and a bench, designed as a peaceful place for visitors to reflect on the impact of Covid-19. Cllr Chauhan emphasized the need to remember the fragility of life and the resilience of communities throughout the pandemic, noting the profound loss many experienced without the chance to say goodbye. This memorial serves as a permanent tribute to honor the sacrifices made by individuals during this challenging period. Additionally, a national service at the National Memorial Arboretum will also mark the fifth anniversary of the pandemic, featuring poetry and personal stories from those affected. Both events highlight the ongoing grief and need for reflection within the community.
