Cavaliers Extend Altman, Atkinson Wins Coach of Year

Cleveland Cavaliers president of basketball operations Koby Altman has signed a contract extension through the 2029-30 season, alongside new multi-year deals for GM Mike Gansey and assistant GM Brandon Weems. Altman, leading since 2017, is credited with rebuilding the team by drafting Darius Garland and Evan Mobley and acquiring All-Stars Donovan Mitchell and Jarrett Allen. Under his leadership, the Cavaliers posted a 64-18 record last season—the second-best in team history—and have reached the playoffs for three consecutive years. The team hired Kenny Atkinson, who won Coach of the Year in his first season, and made key moves including trading for Lonzo Ball and re-signing Larry Nance Jr. Despite a second-round playoff exit due to injuries, the Cavaliers are considered favorites to win the Eastern Conference next season. Owner Dan Gilbert has demonstrated strong support, including a willingness to pay the luxury tax, underscoring the franchise's commitment to championship contention.
