Wisconsin Man Fakes Death, Leads Manhunt

Ryan Borgwardt, a Wisconsin man who faked his own death by overturning his kayak and abandoning his family, has been in daily contact with authorities while remaining elusive about his location, believed to be in Eastern Europe. After deliberately sinking his kayak on August 11, he discarded his belongings and traveled over 50 miles to Madison, eventually crossing into Canada. Law enforcement is focusing on encouraging Borgwardt to turn himself in, emphasizing the emotional toll on his wife and three children, who are receiving support from the Sheriff’s Office. Authorities are also considering seeking restitution for the costs incurred during the manhunt, estimated at $40,000. Borgwardt has shared details about his escape, including how he obtained a second passport and a new life insurance policy. Although he has confirmed his safety in a video message, he has not committed to returning home, leaving his family in distress.
