American Tourist Fatally Shot in Puerto Rico Nightclub

Kevin Mares, a 25-year-old tourist from New York, was fatally shot in the La Perla neighborhood of San Juan, Puerto Rico, while visiting to attend one of Bad Bunny's residency concerts. The shooting occurred early on August 10, 2025, at a local nightspot known as the “Refuge for Mistreated Men,” after an argument broke out among several individuals, with Mares caught as an innocent bystander. Mares was struck twice, rushed to the hospital, but succumbed to his injuries, while two local residents remain hospitalized. La Perla, historically known for violence and drug trafficking, has seen some improvements since federal crackdowns but remains vulnerable to crime, with previous incidents involving tourists reported. Mares was described by family and friends as kind, devoted, and planning to propose to his girlfriend of six years this fall, leaving a profound void in their lives. Authorities have yet to identify a suspect or motive, and a GoFundMe campaign has been launched to assist with Mares' funeral and repatriation expenses.
