Whatcom County Arrests Suspect in Bellingham Park Sexual Assault

Joseph Fawler Drager, a 35-year-old man from Lynden, was arrested by the Whatcom County Sheriff’s Office on August 27, 2025, for the sexual assault and robbery of a 48-year-old woman at Little Squalicum Park in Bellingham. The victim reported being led off the trail, threatened with a knife, raped, bitten, and robbed of her purse and phone on August 20. Despite initial extensive searches involving drones, K-9 units, and eyewitness accounts, Drager evaded capture until surveillance footage and public tips helped identify his vehicle and residence. Law enforcement found evidence including the victim’s belongings and clothing Drager wore during the incident, as well as cut hair from his attempt to alter his appearance. Drager admitted to having a sexual encounter with the victim but faces charges of first-degree rape, first-degree robbery, and second-degree assault with a deadly weapon. Sheriff Donnell “Tank” Tanksley praised the collaborative efforts of detectives, agencies, and the community in bringing the suspect to justice and emphasized the deep impact of the crime on the victim and the community.
