Rite Aid Permanently Closes All Stores
Rite Aid has permanently closed all its stores nationwide and left only website links for customers to request prescription and immunization records and find new pharmacies. The shutdown follows a collapse that began with an initial Chapter 11 filing in October 2023, an emergence from bankruptcy in September 2024, and a second Chapter 11 and liquidation in May 2025 that prompted asset sales and pharmacy-service transition agreements with competitors including CVS, Walgreens, Kroger, Albertsons and Giant Eagle. The chain shrank from thousands of locations to fewer than 100 before the final closures in late September and early October 2025. Rite Aid cited mounting debt, falling sales, opioid-litigation costs and a shifting retail and healthcare landscape for the collapse, and CEO Matt Schroeder said the company sought to preserve jobs and ensure continuity of pharmacy services where possible. The liquidation included sales of assets such as its Thirty Ice Cream brand and has raised concerns about worsening "pharmacy deserts" and reduced access to medications as prescriptions are transferred to other chains.
