Salt-N-Pepa Sue UMG Over Masters, Seek Injunction

Salt-N-Pepa have filed a lawsuit against Universal Music Group (UMG) in New York, alleging that the label refused to honor their 2022 termination notices seeking to reclaim ownership of their master recordings under Section 203 of the US Copyright Act. The hip-hop group claims UMG retaliated by removing their music from streaming platforms, blocking them from profiting and depriving fans of access. Salt-N-Pepa accuse UMG of using 'heavy-handed tactics' and seek damages exceeding $1 million, as well as a permanent injunction to prevent further unauthorized distribution. UMG has responded that it is open to mediation but considers the duo's demands unreasonable. The case highlights ongoing industry tensions over artists’ rights and comes as Salt-N-Pepa prepare for induction into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame.
