61-Year-Old Woman Killed by Alligator in Canoeing Accident Near Lake Kissimmee
A 61-year-old woman, identified as Cynthia Diekema, was killed by an alligator after her canoe capsized on Tiger Creek near Lake Kissimmee, Florida. The incident occurred when she and her husband accidentally drifted over a large alligator in shallow water, prompting the animal to thrash and overturn their canoe. Diekema was thrown directly onto the alligator and bitten, despite her husband's efforts to save her. Authorities responded quickly, recovering her body and capturing two large alligators in the area, though it remains under investigation which was responsible. Officials emphasized that fatal alligator attacks are extremely rare but urge the public to remain vigilant around Florida waterways, especially during mating season. Safety recommendations include staying cautious near the water’s edge and following wildlife guidelines.
