UK, Ireland, Netherlands Announce 2025-26 Storm Names from 50,000 Public Submissions
The Met Office, in partnership with Met Éireann and the Dutch KNMI, has announced the storm names for the 2025-26 season, all of which were submitted by the public, with over 50,000 suggestions received from the UK, Ireland, and the Netherlands. The first three named storms will be Amy, Bram, and Chandra, with many names chosen as tributes to loved ones, cherished pets, and everyday heroes, reflecting deeply personal stories behind the selections. Naming storms, a practice since 2015, aims to help the public recognize storm risks and prepare for severe weather impacts, which are primarily focused on wind but also consider rain or snow. Names are selected based on factors such as ease of pronunciation, cultural considerations, and avoiding controversy or confusion. Examples include Amy, the most popular female name submitted; Dave, inspired by a husband known for loud snoring; and Violet, named for a daughter deemed as fierce as a storm. This naming convention runs alphabetically, excluding certain letters, and helps communicate the potential for medium or high impacts from storms.
